I think it's a good place to talk about NPCs, sure. Once we get stuff established about them, though, they probably deserve pages of their own, rather than being buried in forum posts.
I've set up an "NPCs" link in the sidebar. Feel free to check it out.
But — and this is for everyone — the cool think about doing this on a wiki is that anyone can create and edit pages. I don't mind doing it, but if anyone has an idea for a page, go ahead and make it.
If you need help with wiki syntax (it's not that hard, really, but it is different from the forum code and/or html that most of us are probably familiar with) let me know and I'll help you out — hopefully, anyway. I'm still learning this stuff myself. ;)
Question about the king and queen: how long have they been married? The guy's been in charge for thirty years, so I'd got the impression that they were married for much, if not all, of that time. I note that the king's block up above says Children: none. It's generally a pretty big priority for a king with dubious claims on the throne to sire an heir and establish the appearance of a viable dynasty as quickly as possible. I'd assumed from reading the initial proposition that there would be at least a couple kids around, if not necessarily ones old enough to rule in their own right in the event of the king's death (and not just because I want to play a mom!)
hmmm. Sounds reasonable enough. The formerly young queen must be around, oh, 45-50 now? Unless her later husband had been reigning in her stead (whatthiscalled?) and then married her when she came of age. So, what's her age, Nick?
… maybe a dead child/children? What would the implications of living children be — why would those not automatically inherit, for exmaple? (since I am assuming that it is our intention to keep the succession question open.)
ETA: oops, sorry, Kym — I completely overlooked that you had already given her age. Still, I think the numbers don't add up, unless Marrister married her when she was 3, and we'd need some pretty heavy justifications for that.
I'd been assuming she was somewhere in her forties. I mean, if they've been married that long…Well, I suppose the king could've officially married her when she was a child just to shore up his claim and not actually consummated the marriage until much later for obvious reasons…she could be in her thirties in that scenario? Really depends a lot on what you guys need for the setting to work out.
As for children? With a royal marriage of that length, it's hard not to assume they would've gone to considerable effort to produce children. Securing the line of succession is a notable priority for a monarch. Of course, if any viable heirs were too young to take on the role of king on their own at the time Marrister died, then a regent would be called for—at which point our counselor steps in just as he would if there were no children. And perhaps he decides that it would be for the better if he replaced the children of the queen's first marriage with some of his own…
At any rate, I want a lot of feedback from you guys on what scenario sounds most feasible here, given the prominence of the character.
Oooops…sorry, there was a misunderstanding. I meant it to mean married for 33 years, I was figuring she would have been married around 15/16. Of course, when I was doing all this in my head, it was previous to Nick's decision to *play* the Queen. :) Also, something that was cut from the original proposal, was that the Queen was barren (or the King sterile, but we no that's NEVER the case ;)…and also by making the Queen barren, rather than the King it could open up the opportunity for a bastard to claim the throne.
That was just what *I* was thinking. Nick, please please please, do/fix/change whatever you'd like. I won't take offense.
